,The North Star AISES Alliance and Professional Chapter held its seventh annual AISES Charitable Golf Tournament in August. All funds raised by the 2017 tournament went to support youth STEM programs such as science fairs and robotics competitions, as well as the Region 5 Conference. For more on NSAAP, see the Chapter Spotlight on page 4.
,The College Chapter at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke organized and sponsored the annual AISES Powwow that’s a highlight of the Lumbee Homecoming in July. At this year’s 50th Homecoming, the powwow featured the coronation of the Lumbee Ambassadors.
,Inspired by the aftermath of the hurricanes that devastated Texas and Puerto Rico, engineer- ing student members of IHAWKe, the organiza- tion comprising diversity and women’s programs at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, joined forces to design prefabricated “tiny homes” able to survive hurricanes and provide post-storm, short-term shelter for families. The AISES College Chapter at KU is one of the student groups that make up IHAWKe.
3Accolades, Achievements, and Milestones
,AISES Board of Directors member Dr. John Herrington is among the rst 12 inductees into the National Native American Hall of Fame. Honorees were chosen in eight categories on the basis of qualities like legacy, leadership, mentorship, and sacri ce. Dr. Herrington is the rst tribally enrolled NASA astronaut to y in space.
,Dr. John J. Hoover, former AISES director of research and evaluation, will be inducted into the hall of fame of the College of Education at Illinois State University during this fall’s homecoming. Dr. Hoover is an unrelenting advocate for equity in education who has produced more than 100 publications.
