James Leatham (Cherokee Nation), AISES Technical Excellence awardee and Engineering Fellow at Raytheon, has built a distinguished career in photonics, with advanced degrees, patents, and leadership in cutting-edge research impacting quantum sensing, radar, and avionics. Despite long-standing success, he once felt like an outsider, later recognizing that his inclusive leadership style reflects the Cherokee value of gadugi—togetherness and collective success. Raised globally and influenced by assimilation pressures, Leatham only recently reconnected deeply with his cultural roots, inspired in part by his children and further study. Today, he integrates this cultural understanding with his scientific work, finding renewed purpose and confidence while mentoring others and supporting Indigenous community engagement through outreach and organizational leadership.
