Duke Universit•y
Durham,N.C. duke.edu
As the country’s fth-largest research university, Duke offers access to a distinguished faculty of over 2,500 who emphasize interdisciplinary learning among its 53 majors and 52 minors. The chance to get to know professors is enhanced by the student-faculty ratio of just 8:1 and small classes, with
70 percent enrolling fewer than 19 students. More than 50 percent of undergraduates participate in faculty research. Duke encourages students to engage in experiences near campus and around the globe that will enhance their own learning and bene t others.
Graduate students can pursue studies in more
than 70 departments and programs, with options for interdisciplin- ary research and certi cate and dual- and joint-degree programs.
Science students have many options for learning in state-of- the-art facilities, like the Fitzpat- rick Center for Interdisciplinary Engineering, Medicine, and Applied Sciences. There they can pursue optical science in the Fitzpatrick Institute for Photon- ics, conduct bioengineering research, or explore materials science and engineering.
Other options include the school’s Innovation Co-Lab, which connects inquisitive
students with technology resources and facilities, and the Nicholas School of the Environment, offering a unique learning and living experience at its Marine Lab in Beaufort, N.C.
Undergraduates also bene t from a team of professionals who focus on the quality of their total experience. The Of ce of Undergraduate Education works to integrate academics with other aspects of student life, like social and co-curricular activities. Priorities for this of ce include strengthening faculty-student connections and enhancing advising and residential experiences.
The residential experience in this diverse campus community is designed to foster a tight-knit student body. First-year students form close bonds through their
experience of living together on one campus of the three that make up the 9,000-acre Duke University (7,200 of those acres are wooded). From there it’s easy to explore the shops, restaurants, and cultural resources of the university’s
hometown of Durham, N.C. After the rst year, students continue their on-campus residential experience by moving into a mixed-class “house,” or an optional fraternity or sorority.
