My name is Lori Huck, I am Choctaw and Cherokee from Oklahoma, and I am currently a Master’s student at Portland State University in Portland, OR. My research is focusing on volcanic and geological hazards on Tribal lands. Part of my research will focus on ethnogeology which is the Indigenous understanding of landscape and geological history, processes, and materials. This includes Indigenous artwork and stories that record geological events and features that are known and unknown to Western science. I am also very involved in leadership and volunteer activities through my university, and I enjoy participating in any workshops, programs, or events that allow me to build my skills and knowledge in leadership, advocacy, and research.
Outside of my academic life, I enjoy photography, bead work, outdoor activities, and traveling. One of my favorite things to do is go on road trips, even if it is just for a couple of hours, I enjoy exploring new places and seeing new landscapes. I recently started bringing my kitty, Sophia, with me and she visited her first National Park, Arches, this past December when we drove back home to Oklahoma. While I do enjoy being active, I also enjoy just sitting in my apartment watching TV shows and cuddling with my kitty. My current favorite TV shows are Golden Girls, Supernatural, and Grey’s Anatomy.
AISES has meant a lot to me, I have been able to have so many experiences and opportunities since I joined in 2020. I was the Region 4 Student Representative for 2 years, a role that I thoroughly enjoyed! I am excited to take on the new role of Jr. National Representative; I look forward to all the new roles and responsibilities this position will bring.
