Mentorship in STEM

Mentorship with AISES is more than guidance—it’s connection, culture, and continuity.

Too often, Indigenous students walk into classrooms and careers where they feel invisible.

Help us change that.

Our mentorship approach honors both the rigor of STEM and the wisdom of Indigenous heritage. By combining mentorship, Indigenous identity, and career development, we empower students to bring their whole selves—their knowledge, culture, and community values—into their academic and professional lives.

The AISES Full-Circle Mentorship program matches college students with a professional AISES member in traditional and peer-to-peer academic and career mentoring.

Participants will co-create a mentorship commitment plan, check-in monthly, and are encouraged to participate in webinars to enhance their mentorship relationship. Explore our program features:

  • Mentor-Mentee Matching Pairing students with mentors based on academic interests, career goals, and cultural values.
  • Cultural and Professional Development Workshops Topics include Indigenous identity in STEM, research ethics, communication, and leadership.
  • Storytelling and Sharing Circles Spaces for mentors and mentees to share experiences, reflect on challenges, and celebrate achievements.
  • STEM Career Exploration Introduction to internships, conferences, and networking with Indigenous professionals and organizations.
  • Community Engagement Encouraging mentees to give back through outreach, cultural events, mentoring, and STEM education for younger students.

When Indigenous students thrive, they strengthen their Nations and help build a more sustainable, inclusive world.

Indigenous worldviews bring balance, interconnectedness, and responsibility—concepts that enrich scientific discovery. Honoring Indigenous identity promotes cultural pride, resilience, and self-determination, all of which help combat the challenges Indigenous students may feel in university and workplace environments. Mentorship helps Indigenous students see that success in STEM is not just about academics—it’s cultural, relational, and holistic.
