FIIRE: Empowering Indigenous Students with Culturally Relevant STEM, Robotics & Coding

FIIRE (Fostering Indigenous Innovation in Robotics Education) is a groundbreaking AISES initiative that empowers educators and students to explore coding and robotics through the lens of renewable energy, sustainability, and traditional Indigenous wisdom. Geared toward K12 public, private, and tribal schools, FIIRE provides hands-on STEM tools—including micro:bits and Climate Action Kits—integrated with culturally relevant lessons that blend traditional ecological knowledge with modern technology.

Teacher stipends ($300 for the Lead Teacher and $100 for each additional teacher)

Program Requirements

Schools must be K-12 public, private, or tribal institutions serving a significant percentage of Indigenous students, with priority for first-time AISES participants.
The Lead Teacher must recruit three additional teachers from their school or district to form a team of four, who will attend an all-day on-site PD training conducted by a FIIRE team member.
Participating teachers must commit to ongoing virtual engagement—including college and career readiness lessons and guest speaker sessions—to support continuous professional development.
A minimum of 50 students should participate in the program (exceptions may be made for smaller entities)
Schools must provide a suitable large space (e.g., a library, oversized classroom, or gym) for the training and hands-on activities.
Both teachers and students must complete post-implementation surveys to assess program impact.
