AISES Advisory Councils

AISES has eight advisory councils established to guide our work through council members’ industry expertise, diverse perspectives, Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), and community collaboration.

Council of Elders

The AISES Council of Elders share their wisdom and guidance with AISES students and with the organization as a whole, representing an integral aspect of the AISES philosophy of passing on knowledge to the next generation.

Corporate Advisory Council (CAC)

The CAC is a professional association of corporate individuals who support AISES in its mission to increase the representation of Native people in STEM, providing industry advice and counsel to AISES Leadership.

Government Relations Council (GRC)

The GRC works to establish and support working relationships between Federal government agencies and AISES.

Canadian Indigenous Advisory Council (CIAC)

The CIAC works with AISES in creating opportunities for Canadian Indigenous members and to advise AISES on issues of relevance and importance to its Canadian Indigenous members.

Tribal Nations Advisory Council (TNAC)

Harnessing the collective wisdom of our Tribal Nations, the TNAC collaborates to create STEM opportunities and pathways within tribal communities that will nurture, empower, and sustain the next seven generations.

Creating Equity & Diversity and Advancing our Relatives (CEDAR)

CEDAR is dedicated to catalyzing systemic change within educational institutions and workspaces, striving to cultivate environments that are not only equitable but also inclusive.

Academic Advisory Council (AAC)

The AAC is comprised of faculty at a U.S. or Canadian institution of higher education who play a vital role in advising AISES on academic matters ensuring a vibrant academic ecosystem.

Professional Chapters Council (PCC)

The PCC advises AISES on issues important to professional chapters and members and continually works to increase opportunities for AISES professionals.

Council of Elders

The AISES Council of Elders are a key part of our organization. Our elders educate our members on cultural practices, guiding the actions of the organization, and helping to build the foundation that supports the work of future generations. Elders attend AISES events across the nation, and lead talking circles and other events centered around creating safe spaces for the students and professionals who attend them. They also welcome and honor new Sequoyahs, our lifetime members and relatives. The council’s role is essential to members and staff alike.

Corporate Advisory Council

The AISES Corporate Advisory Council (CAC) is a professional association of corporate representatives who provide industry advice and counsel to AISES Leadership and contributes to advancing the AISES mission by:

  • Supporting the development and implementation of programs that engage PK-12 students, teachers, and families in the STEM fields.
  • Providing scholarships, internship programs and/or employment opportunities to college students and professionals.
  • Supporting AISES events through sponsorships, presentations, and providing career information and resources.
  • Supporting and engaging local student and professional chapters
  • Providing industry expertise and guidance related to employment trends and needs.
  • Developing support for AISES consistent with individual company capabilities, including financial contributions, in-kind gifts and human resources.
  • Facilitating effective public relations for AISES activities via coverage in company publications.
  • Engaging with other like-minded individuals and organizations for collaboration and best-practice sharing.

The CAC meets four times annually (2 virtual and 2 in person) and the CAC Chair represents the CAC at regularly scheduled AISES Board meetings. In addition, council members are encouraged to join one or more of the following subcommittees:

  • ERG Playbook/Best Practices
  • Corporate Partnership and Networking
  • Corporate Student Outreach
  • Connecting Corporations to College Curriculum

Government Relations Council (GRC)

The GRC is comprised of U.S. Government employees who support working relationships between Federal government agencies and AISES, and identifies government resources, develops strategies, and promotes government careers by:

  • Assisting in the placement of Native people into government jobs, by working closely with AISES student chapters, and colleges and universities.
  • Coordinating and participating in government sponsored workshops at the AISES events
  • Identifying federal funding opportunities for AISES.
  • Supporting student and professional chapter events.
  • Identifying federal internship and employment programs.

The GRC Chair represents the GRC at regularly scheduled AISES Board meetings.

Canadian Indigenous Advisory Council (CIAC)

The primary role of the CIAC is to advise AISES on issues of relevance and importance to its Canadian Indigenous (Status and Non-Status First Nations, Metis and Inuit) members. In addition, the CIAC also works to assist AISES in creating opportunities for Canadian Indigenous members and to support the AISES mission of substantially increasing the representation of Canadian Indigenous Peoples in STEM by:

  • Advises AISES on issues important to Canadian Indigenous chapters and members.
  • Assists in the formation of professional and post-secondary chapters of AISES in Canada
  • Encourages K-12 Canadian Indigenous educator and student participation in AISES programming, where appropriate.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Canadian Indigenous STEM community and AISES.
  • Provides networking opportunities for Canadian Indigenous AISES chapters and members.
  • Promotes communication between Canadian Indigenous AISES chapters and members.
  • Advocates for Canadian Indigenous content in Winds of Change Magazine and on the AISES website.
  • Provides input to National Conference proceedings in order to increase relevance for Canadian Indigenous AISES members.
  • Promotes, assists and supports AISES in hosting a gathering of Canadian Indigenous AISES members and allies at the National Conference
  • Supports AISES in developing a biennial conference held in Canada to serve Canadian Indigenous AISES chapters and members.

Tribal Nations Advisory Council (TNAC)

Harnessing the collective wisdom of our Tribal Nations, the TNAC collaborates to create STEM opportunities and pathways within tribal communities that will nurture, empower, and sustain the next seven generations. The TNAC consists of representatives from Tribal Nations in the United States and Canada and supports AISES with the following:

  • Advises AISES on issues important to tribal AISES chapters and their members.
  • Supports AISES events through sponsorships, presentations, and providing career resources.
  • Assists in the formation and development of Tribal AISES Chapters.
  • Encourages PK-12 Tribal educator and student participation in AISES programming.
  • Provides scholarships, internship programs, and/or employment opportunities.
  • Provides expertise and guidance related to employment trends and needs in Tribal communities.
  • Develops tribal support for AISES including financial contributions, in-kind gifts, and human resources.
  • Assists AISES in fundraising efforts through networking and participation.
  • Serves as a liaison between Tribal Nations and AISES.
  • Provides networking opportunities for tribal AISES chapters and members.
  • Advocates for content in Winds of Change Magazine and on the AISES website to represent Tribal Nations.
  • Provides input to AISES National Conference proceedings to increase relevance for Tribal Nations.
  • Supports AISES in hosting a gathering of Tribal Nations’ representatives at the AISES National Conference and other Native-focused events.

Together we will build strong and sustainable STEM futures for our Tribal Nations!

Join TNAC to serve as a liaison between Tribal Nations and AISES by attending four meetings annually either in-person or virtually. The TNAC Chair represents the TNAC at regularly scheduled AISES Board meetings.

Creating Equity & Diversity and Advancing our Relatives (CEDAR)

Educational institutions and workspaces often don’t have the support systems in place to recruit and retain Indigenous students and employees. AISES seeks to change this by focusing on systemic change in educational institutions and workspaces to create equitable and inclusive environments in which Indigenous students and professionals belong, contribute, and thrive.

Professional Chapter Council (PCC)

The PCC consists of representatives of the AISES professional chapters who advise AISES on issues important to professional chapters and members, increase opportunities for AISES professionals, and support the AISES mission by:

  • Supporting the formation of additional professional chapters.
  • Assisting professional chapters in fundraising ideas and programs.
  • Serving as a liaison between professional chapters and AISES.
  • Assisting professional chapters to recruit new members and retain current members.
  • Providing networking opportunities and professional development for professional chapters and members.
  • Assisting professional chapters in their outreach
  • Reviewing professional chapter affiliation agreements and bylaws and presenting proposed changes to AISES.

The PCC meet quarterly and the PCC Chair represents the PCC at regularly scheduled AISES Board meetings.

Academic Advisory Council (AAC)

The AAC provides guidance to AISES regarding academic matters such as grant proposal writing, educational and research project design, faculty careers, college admissions and financial aid, postgraduate study and fellowship opportunities, research opportunities, and other higher education opportunities. The Council will engage in issues including but not limited to: 

  • Provide recommendations concerning the scientific and technical merit of grant proposals and projects. 
  • Provide recommendations concerning protections for human subjects and other areas as applicable for grant proposals or projects. 
  • Make recommendations concerning the appropriateness of budget requests for grant proposals and projects. 
  • Provide mentorship to AISES student members who are interested in pursuing a career in Academia. 
  • Support AISES activities and chapters at AAC members’ colleges and universities. 
  • Alert AISES to potential grant funding and institutional partnership opportunities. 

The AAC meet quarterly and the AAC Chair represents the AAC at regularly scheduled AISES Board meetings.
