Winds of Change Magazine Wins 2023 National Native Media Awards

AISES is pleased to announce that Winds of Change magazine has won two 2023 National Native Media Awards and merited an additional Honorable Mention from the Native American Journalists Association (NAJA). AISES congratulates the magazine team and the Editorial Advisory Council for these awards, which were announced on July 3.

 

For three consecutive years, Winds of Change has received recognition in the Print/Online Best Feature Story and Best Environmental Coverage categories. This year the magazine garnered first place for its story on “Climate Change and Infrastructure” with accompanying coverage of “Canada’s Indigenous Communities Combat Climate Change.” . Winds of Change also earned an Honorable Mention in the Best Environmental Coverage category for the profile of Ryan Matilton in the .

 

The profile of Dr. Sonia Ibarra in the merited Second Place in the Print/Online Best Feature Story category. Dr. Ibarra, the 2022 winner of the AISES Indigenous Excellence Professional Award, was recognized at the 2022 AISES National Conference in Palm Springs, Calif.

 

“The 10 National Native Media Awards Winds of Change has received in just the past three years are a testament to the hard work of the team,” said Karen English, editor of the magazine. “More broadly, the awards underscore the commitment of AISES to supporting Indigenous talent in STEM. Keeping Winds of Change readers abreast of the latest news of AISES and its members as well as advances in STEM is a privilege, and for the team these awards are both humbling and inspiring.”

 

The Native American Journalists Association is the leading international awards organization honoring excellence in print/online, radio/podcast, television, and multimedia journalism that elevates Indigenous voices and focuses on issues important to Native people.

 

An international group of judges, along with their outlets and organizations, donated their time and expertise in selecting this year’s winners from over 850 entries. The 2023 judging panel included Alice Malepeai Silbanuz, Ka Wai Ola News; Beth M. Warden, Dakota News Now Television KSFY, KDLT, and FOX Sioux Falls; Brian Bull, KLCC; Brittany Hobson, The Canadian Press; Debra Krol, Arizona Republic; Derrick James, McAlester News-Capital; Jennifer Pemberton, KTOO; Lenzy Krehbiel-Burton, Tulsa World; Lucy Meyer, Freelance; Molly Young, The Oklahoman/USA TODAY Network; Shaun Griswold, Source New Mexico; Tyler Thomas, Cherokee Phoenix; and Dr. Victoria LaPoe, E.W. Scripps School of Journalism.

 

The National Native Media 2023 honors were conferred in seven different categories, including Student Division, Associate Division 1 (circulation below 5,000), Associate Division II (circulation 5,000 to 10,000), Associate Division III (circulation above 10,000), Professional Division I (circulation below 5,000), Professional Division II (circulation 5,000 to 10,000), and Professional Division III (circulation above, 10,000). NAJA will present more than 200 awards during the awards banquet as part of the National Native Media Conference at the RBC Convention Center in Winnipeg, Canada, on August 10-12.
