Scholarships and Internships
AISES offers opportunities to members to apply for merit-based various scholarships and internship programs.
Contributions are now being accepted for the 2009-2010 American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship. Each year AISES offers scholarships to college undergraduates and graduates with exceptional academic merit and leadership. The A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1983 in memory of A.T. Anderson, a Mohawk and chemical engineer who, early in his career, worked with Albert Einstein. Anderson was a consultant to the United States Congress on American Indian Affairs, was one of the six AISES' founders and AISES' first Executive Director.
Since the program's inception, over $7 million in scholarship dollars have been awarded to talented American Indian and Alaska Native students, enabling them to pursue their educational goals. For many, college initially appears unattainable due to the lack of financial resource and little or no peer and family support. However, through AISES, many of these students find both financial assistance and role models to encourage them to obtain a higher education. "So far, I have not had to pay out of pocket for college. This makes me realize how much more important it is for me to finish my degree because all these organizations providing scholarships are expecting me to succeed," says Dana Wassmann, a Mechanical Engineer major from the Nome Eskimo Community and a 2008-2009 recipient of the A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship.
AISES would like to recognize and thank the following funders for their support of the 2008-2009 A.T. Memorial Scholarship Fund: 3M, Chevron, Federal Renewable Energy Laboratory, Northrop Grumman, Porter Scientific, Raytheon & Raytheon American Indian Network (RAIN), Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, Verizon Foundation and all other individual contributors.
"For Americans to maintain our standing as the global leader in science and technology, we need to support the next generation of top talent in science and engineering," says Pamala Silas, AISES President and CEO. "This support helps remarkable students proceed with the next step in their education to ultimately become scientists, technicians, and engineers making a difference."
Student members continue to look to AISES for assistance in accomplishing their goals, much the same way AISES relies on professionals and partners to provide this support. Any interested funders in the 2009-2010 A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship Fund should contact Lorena Blanco, Development Director at lblanco@aises.org or 505-765-1052 ext. 114.
AISES scholarships are intended to defray some of the costs of tuition and other educational expenses, increasing access to higher education and improving college retention rates of our members. AISES administers five scholarship programs. Click here for AISES Scholarships.
AISES internships are intended to provide applied learning experiences to AISES students through 10-week summer internships at various federal, tribal and private organizations. Internship provides environments for students to gain work experience, knowledge, workplace skills, and access to mentors and role models in specific STEM disciplines.
