Student to Academic Professoriate for American Indians (SAPAI)
Deadline: March 31, 2010

SAPAI is a project funded by NSF to increase rates of degree completion for American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) graduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). It also aims to increase the representation of AIAN scholars in STEM faculties at Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCU).

SAPAI has three program STEPS.
Step 1*: Summer Writing Retreat: June 14– July 23, 2010. Location TBA
Step 2*: Faculty Preparation Training: July 26– August 13, 2010. Location TBA
*Participants in Steps 1 and 2 receive: weekly stipends ($250), lodging, meals,
transportation (to and from training location), and limited child care assistance.
Step 3: TCU Faculty Placement
A year of partial financial support in the form of a stipend ($23,000) to ensure the SAPAI
scholar will have time to prepare and submit proposals for external grant funding of
research and education programs in science to take place at the TCU. The scholar is
assisted by a “Transition Team” comprised of an Academic Advisor, a representative from
the TCU where they will be placed and a member of the SAPAI administrative team.

Required prerequisites:
AIAN graduate students in STEM fields who have completed all degree requirements with
the exception of their thesis/dissertation are eligible.

Research Experience in Astronomy, Space, and Planetary Sciences for Undergraduates

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates program at the Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences aims to provide undergraduate students an experience in research in astronomy, space, and planetary sciences. For ten weeks every summer, about 12 students join our program, we help them identify a research problem, and provide the resources to research the problem, design the experiment, gather the data, interpret the results, and prepare them for publication. Most of our students take their results to an international conference, like an American Astronomical Society meetings or the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference. To help in the process of professional development that must accompany research training we organize field trips to NASA Johnson Space Center, the Oklahoma Badlands, Oklahoma Aquarium, a local observatory and a local aerospace company, social events, and seminars, and we hold mid-summer poster presentations and end-of-summer oral presentations. Since we are fully committed to the Nation’s efforts to fully tap all potential talent pools, we especially encourage applications from American Indians.

Research Opportunity for Undergraduates at Portland State University
Deadline: April 2, 2010

This program is an eight-week long experience that gives students the opportunity to work closely with a PSU faculty member to produce a research project. Each student will learn to operate either a scanning electron or focused ion beam microscope (SEM or FIB), and then use these techniques when working on their independent research projects. This is an excellent opportunity to gain real research experience, work hands-on with advanced equipment, present and possibly publish findings, and make invaluable contacts for future education and professional advantage.

The program runs from June 21nd through August 13th, and students will be expected to work approximately 40 hours per week for a $3200 stipend. Some assistance with local housing may be available.

We will be accepting applications through April 2, 2010. Female and minority students are strongly encouraged to apply.
