HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2006 NATIONAL CONFERENCE

The 28th Annual National AISES Conference held in Detroit, Michigan was a great success with 1411 attendees. The conference theme was Generations of Innovation.  AISES celebrated the ongoing legacy of Native innovation and its impact on the practices and knowledge of modern science and engineering, and looks forward to the continuing contributions of indigenous peoples.
The AISES “Full Circle of Support” brings together all generations of the AISES family at this annual event to support the advancement of American Indian and Alaska Native professionals, role models and future leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematical fields.

Attendees enjoyed a powerful and motivating address at the Opening Ceremony from Mary Sue Coleman, President of the University of Michigan, who stressed the critical need for more science and engineering professionals.  In addition, attendees heard a personal, heartfelt and humorous address from Rear Admiral Holmes (Lumbee), United States Navy, retired.  In keeping with the theme, AISES was proud to welcome Garrett Yazzie (Navajo), 15 years old, a young innovator and inventor, to this year’s conference.  Garrett is recognized for creating a solar heating system using a Pontiac radiator.

AISES proudly presented the third annual Professional Awards.  The 2006 Professional of the Year was presented to Frank Martinez, Worldwide Digital Inclusion Program Manager at Intel.  Attendees listened to a personal and powerful presentation by Mr. Martinez.  The Executive Excellence Award was presented to Ray Haynes, Director of Technical Alliances for Northrop Grumman Space Technology.  The Technical Excellence Award was presented to Chris Cornelius, principal member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories.  The Most Promising Engineer of Scientist Award was presented to Dr. Bevan Baas, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Davis.

Over 30 concurrent sessions were offered during the conference for educators, professionals and students. In addition the AISES K-12 department offered a full agenda for the high school students in attendance.  K-12 workshop highlights included interactive sessions on creating kinetic cards and books and the mathematical foundations of ballistics.

The National Conference served to remind us all of the rich existing talent and promising young scientists and engineers within the AISES family.  The Conference also served to remind us of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and motivates us for the upcoming year’s work.

A special thanks to Joe Connolly and Krista Swenda and the local community members for their assistance and service on the local planning committee!

Thank you to everyone who helped to make this conference a success!
