HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2005 ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE

The 27th Annual National AISES Conference--the first ever in North Carolina--was by all accounts a resounding success. The conference theme was Pathways to Stronger Communities. Attendees enjoyed a personal and heartfelt address at the Opening Ceremony from Bob Manney, Vice-President, Deputy for Engineering, of Lockheed Martin.

Also at the Opening Ceremony, AISES proudly presented the second annual Professional Awards. The 2005 Professional of the Year was presented to Nancy Jackson, PhD, Deputy Director of International Security Programs at Sandia National Laboratories. Attendees listened to a powerful and thought provoking presentation by Dr. Jackson. The Executive Excellence Award was presented in absentia to Johnpaul Jones, principal architect at Jones & Jones Architects and Landscape Architects, Ltd. The Technical Excellence Award was presented to Mark Hakey, manager of IBM’s Process Integration team at Albany Nanotech. The Most Promising Engineer of Scientist Award was presented to John De Bassige, mechanical engineer at Sandia National Laboratories.

The 2005 Annual National Conference was well attended with 1497 attendees. AISES was pleased to see so many of our members join us in Charlotte!

Over 30 concurrent sessions were offered during the conference for educators, professionals and students. A general session was offered on Saturday afternoon which highlighted three diverse projects working to strengthen native communities. In addition the AISES K-12 department offered a full agenda for the high school students in attendance. K-12 workshops included a number of interactive sessions on Nuclear Science and Radioactive Materials, Safety Engineering, Exploring Science Inquiry through Rockets, Science and Math through Indigenous Children’s Activities, and grant writing.

A special thanks to Valarie Deese, Marcus Collins, and Dwight Harris and the local community members for their assistance and service on the local planning committee!
