HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2004 ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE

The conference theme, "Expanding the Circle", was a fitting one as AISES held its conference in Alaska for the first time. In addition, the theme reflects the AISES vision of providing a full circle of support to its constituents.

Attendees listened to an enlightening and heartfelt keynote address from Richard "Savik" Glenn (Inupiaq), ice scientist, geologist and subsistence whaler. Mr. Glenn discussed his personal experiences as both a scientist and as a member of his community.

AISES proudly commenced the presentation of the new Professional Awards to recognize the accomplishments of the American Indian and Alaska Native professionals as role models, leaders and innovators in science, engineering, and technology related disciplines. The Most Promising Engineer of Scientist was presented to Aaron M. Thomas, PhD, Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Idaho. The AISES Executive Excellence Award was presented to Richard "Rick" Stephens, senior vice president at the Boeing Company. The Professional of the Year Award was presented to Richard "Savik:" Glenn, Vice President of Lands for the Artic Slope Regional Corporation.

Conference attendees enjoyed a number of Alaska Native Traditional Activities on Friday Night. The traditional activities included a Native Fashion Review, Native Youth Olympics, and a number of excellent dance groups which featured Tlingit/Haida, Yup'ik and Inupiaq dancing.
